Summer Art Camp 2017

Fun art camps for the summer of 2017!

We offer full-day art camps that focus on two different art processes five days in a row. We strive to offer the community intensive experiences with art that spark creativity, ingenuity, and fire up the imagination... all while having fun!

Fast friendships are formed at Lillie Pad Studios because the art processes we do are often energetic and collaborative. Not only will kids and teens walk away with several unique art pieces at the end of each week. Campers will also take with them fond memories of learning new art processes in a small, close-knit group of peers.

We are the only art studio in Anne Arundel county teaching processes such as Glassblowing, Coldworking Glass, Resin Casting and Glass Flameworking. Much of what we teach is completely new to everyone, including parents, so please look over the art camp descriptions below and feel free to contact us with any questions at all. Art Director, Michelle Lillie is always happy to answer emails or phone calls.

We offer EARLY DROP-OFF and EXTENDED STAY sessions too!

Please note that there is a $1/minute late fee for campers that are picked up late. The fee is to be paid in cash at the time of late pick up. Our instructors work very hard to make Summer Art Camp at Lillie Pad Studios a fulfilling experience. Our work day is not over when you pick up your child. We are busy preparing projects and studios for the following day of fun with art long after campers leave. Please be mindful of the many hours we put in to make art camp for your child fun and rewarding. We thank you for taking this into consideration and picking up your child on time.

We keep camps small to ensure personalized instruction so please register early to reserve your spot. Camps will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Camps that fill will have a wait list. Please email  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  to get put on the wait list if a camp is full.

Camp Descriptions

GLASSBLOWING

This camp will be full of excitement as campers create their own blown glass forms. Blown cups, vases, and bowls are some forms that will be explored. A short slide lecture will introduce campers to a brief history of the ancient art of glassblowing and how studio glass in America came to be what it is today. The tools used in this camp are essentially the same tools that have been used in hot glass working for centuries. Our experienced glass instructors will give campers one-on-one assistance and step-by-step instruction to help them make the forms that they design and draw in their sketchbooks. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!

COLDWORKING GLASS

This camp will be a fun contrast to the hot glassblowing class campers will do in the morning. Campers will use a diamond saw, a diamond grinding lathe, diamond drill bits, a sandblaster, acid-etching and more to transform shiny translucent glass into something completely different. Campers will learn to cut, grind, polish, etch, and drill holes in glass to make unique sculpture and functional pieces. There will be a short slide lecture to introduce campers to glass coldworking techniques throughout history and provide some examples of contemporary cut, ground, polished, and etched glass. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!

FUSING & SLUMPING GLASS

Campers will learn how to make jewelry components and small glass pieces by cutting colored sheet glass, layering, and melting the layers together in a kiln. Molds can me used to create unique three-dimensional forms in glass. Pendants, beads, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, wall-hangings, plates, and sculptures are some examples of what the students can make. We will have a short introductory slide lecture to take campers on journey of fusing and slumping glass throughout history, from when these techniques originated in ancient Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium B.C. to the contemporary uses today. We will discuss how flashy adornments have been worn with pride throughout history by warriors, tribal people, military, religious figures, wealthy people, musicians, actors, and fashion models to reflect social status. Drawing from these inspirations, students will design their own adornments to reflect what makes them special. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!

MIXED MEDIA

Campers will have fun experimenting with materials such as glass, concrete, metal, wood, seedpods, shells, bones, clay, and more! We will create a series of at least five tiles that will symbolically represent specific milestones on our lives. These “story tiles” will be of unique form and will be made using a variety of sculpted components to tell the story of our lives. Students are encouraged to bring in special objects like shells, beads, toys, bottle caps, marbles, or other collected items that can be embedded into the story stones as memory markers of a specific time in their lives. The last stepping stone we make will reflect our experience in this class and will be comprised of components found on a hike to the creek behind the studio and any other objects that the artist feels are representative of their time in summer camp at Lillie Pad Studios. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!

GLASS FLAMEWORKING

This camp will be full of fun technical demonstrations to teach campers a how to create a variety of unique beads, pendants, marbles, and other small sculptures in glass. Campers will melt colored glass rods in the flame of a torch and can also experiment with brilliantly patterned polymer clay beads. We will have a short slide lecture to take campers on journey of bead working throughout history, from the origins of bead working to contemporary artists who use beads in jewelry and sculptural installations today. We will discuss how flashy adornments have been worn with pride throughout history by warriors, tribal people, military, religious figures, wealthy people, musicians, actors, and fashion models to reflect social status. Drawing from these inspirations, students will design their own adornments to reflect upon what makes them special. Students will be asked to think creatively and symbolically. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!

RESIN CASTING

By casting objects in resin, campers will give more permanence to fragile objects such as images from magazine clippings or photographs, receipts, ticket stubs, flowers, leaves, insects, and other small objects of temporary nature. Campers can encapsulate small objects or photos brought from home, found objects from a nature walk, or clippings from provided magazines into resin. Resin can be cast into molds, bottle caps, toys, shells, or any other object that has a cavity or reservoir to contain the resin while in liquid form thus allowing artists to create artworks that incorporate significant memorabilia. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!

TORCHWORK TURNAROUND

This camp will have an exciting, interactive relationship with the morning camp. Campers will sculpt glass components in the flame of a torch that will be added to blown glass pieces made in the morning camp. The process is called flameworking. After sculptural pieces have been completed in the torchworking studio, they will be assembled using blown glass pieces using both hot and cold processes. There will be a variety of technical demonstrations to teach students a how to create unique small sculptures in glass. Beginners and experienced campers welcome! Sketchbooks and all materials are included. All you need to bring is your creativity and a packed lunch!
